WREX — Everyone involved with Rockford's Phantom Regiment are gearing up for a big 2026 season. One that marks the Corps 70th year in existence. Phantom Regiment CEO Amanda Hamaker is entering her third season in her role and says each year, every Corps is special, but this year, feels different. "There is something really driving performance among these members, like people have never seen before," she said.

WREX — Northern Illinois University's Wind Ensemble is preparing to perform one of the most challenging pieces in wind band literature, featuring unconventional instruments and techniques that push the boundaries of traditional band music. The ensemble will perform "Mountains Rising Nowhere" during a concert Friday at 7 p.m. at the NIU School of Music's Boutell Concert Hall. The piece requires musicians to sing, whistle and play tuned water glasses instead of traditional instruments.

WREX — News broke just after noon on Wednesday that the Highland Community College Softball team's season was canceled. In a social media post, the school's athletic department posted: "Unfortunately, due to an incomplete roster, we are unable to continue competition for the remainder of this season." The post also said that the program plans to return for the 2027 season. "We sincerely thank everyone who continues to support our program.
