Dementia is an irreversible, neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive impairment across cognitive domains and functional decline. The Aotearoa New Zealand population is ageing and, with age being the most significant risk factor for dementia, the prevalence of dementia is projected to more than double in the coming decades from 70,000 in 2020 to 170,000 in 2050.

Calculation of dementia prevalence Using the deceased date, we were able to determine the number of dementia cases in the IDI (alive and deceased) in the four study years: 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017, 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2018, 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 and 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020.
