Over the past three decades, the retirement age of American workers has trended upward. According to Gallup’s annual Economy and Personal Finance survey, the current average reported retirement age is 61, up from 57 in 1991, while non-retirees now have an average target retirement age of 66, compared to 60 in 1995. Results were based on telephone interviews conducted from April 1–19, 2022, with a random sample of 1,018 adults living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
