Rethinking College Admissions: An Argument Against the ACT
Editor’s Note: A few weeks ago, Times-Tribune columnist Brian Theodore asked his English 095 students to write about something that concerns them in their society or world, something they might like to change or something that profoundly affects them — good or bad. The class composed the works into editorials, which will be published here over the next few issues. Schools should stop giving standardized tests.

Phage-induced efflux down-regulation boosts antibiotic efficacy
Abstract The interactions between a virus and its host vary in space and time and are affected by the presence of molecules that alter the physiology of either the host or the virus. Determining the dynamics of these interactions is paramount for predicting the fate of bacterial and phage populations and for designing rational phage-antibiotic therapies. We study the interactions between stationary phase Burkholderia thailandensis and the phage phi Bp-AMP1.

Opioid Overdoses: Prosecution Risk and the Need for Naloxone
There were more than 47,000 fatal drug overdoses in the United States during 2014, with roughly two thirds of those deaths linked to opioids.[1] Synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, are involved in the mortality rates. Nonpharmaceutical fentanyls (NPFs) are potent opioid receptor agonists that cause a toxidrome characterized by profound central nervous system and respiratory depression.
MHD surrogate model for convection in electromagnetically levitated molten metal droplets processed using the ISS-EML facility
Abstract Electromagnetic levitation experiments in space are an essential tool for thermophysical property measurement and solidification studies. In light of the need for material properties as inputs to industrial process modeling, investigators need new tools for efficient experiment planning. MHD surrogate modeling is a parametric method for prediction of flow conditions during processing using the ISS-EML facility.
The Italian Campaign
The road up Monte Cassino is a twisting, calf-cramping series of switchbacks, but it is only eight kilometres long. After a screaming 25K downhill from our lunch spot by Lago Selva, this is our final reward. It is the last climb of our trip at the end of a week of cycling down the Adriatic Coast of Italy with Wounded Warriors Canada. We are finding the path of Canadian soldiers who fought in the Italian Campaign during the Second World War.
designing emergency management infrastructure
Today’s potential crises and disasters require the ability to customize a message and communicate to the building or campus occupants in real time. The large number of hospital visitors who are not familiar with the building’s layout, egress path and evacuation procedures makes an effective communication system especially important. Fortunately, technology enables the delivery of specific life-safety messages in real time to targeted groups of people through multiple channels.
