Letter to the Editor: Open Comments Respond to South Boulder Rec Center Shutdown
This letter was sent to Yellow Scene Magazine. As with all Letters to the Editor, the views expressed are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the publication. We value providing space for community voices. The folks trying to stop the City from shutting down the South Boulder Rec Center have attended the last four or so Council meetings in force. Their petition has almost 3,800 signatures.
Letter to the Editor: City of Boulder’s Lawfare
This letter was sent to Yellow Scene Magazine. As with all Letters to the Editor, the views expressed are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the publication. We value providing space for community voices. There’s a pattern of the City of Boulder spending big on legal work to intimidate: It’s almost a certainty that the city will spend far more than $2,800 to keep the police video secret that Yellow Scene wants.
How propaganda and genocide warped Boulder and me (Opinion)
By Evan Ravitz My (5/5/1952) outstanding birthday twins are Karl Marx (5/5/1818) and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (5/5/1813). I admit to social tendencies but really identify with old Soren, who is quite quotable. My favorite is “Life can only be understood backward; but it must be lived forward.” Now at 73, I start understanding my life and want to pay that understanding forward, because my life was warped by two things warping Boulder now: genocide and propaganda.
We Don’t Tolerate Genocide
Letter to the Editor from Evan Ravitz My mom’s Jewish family fled Nazi Germany in 1932 to London, then a farm during the bombing, then Toronto and then Mexico City before finally allowed into the US in 1940. The US and its mideast buddies Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt etc., have turned “never again” into again and again, now risking nuclear world war.
Guest opinion: Evan Ravitz: Citizens rule in a democracy, but nearly all ‘leaders’ are trying to stop it
By Evan Ravitz The Camera story about Safe Zones 4 Kids gets both fact and the Colorado Constitution wrong when it says, “The citizen-initiated measure gathered enough signatures from its online petition to be included on the November ballot, prompting the Boulder City Council to give Safe Zones final approval earlier this month.” Facts: As you can see on the front page of the city petition website petitions.bouldercolorado.gov, Safe Zones got only 483 of the required 3437 signatures online...
Boulder needs transportation that respects the laws of physics Original
By Evan Ravitz I sold my last car in 1989 and have used a bicycle, now an e-bike, for 99% of my transportation and the bus for the other 1%. In 1994, along with longtime city Councilmember Steve Pomerance, I helped defeat the City’s $250,000,000 proposed Transit Tax.
Evan Ravitz: Online petitioning is ‘people power’ at work in Boulder
By Evan Ravitz The number one slogan of the ’60s was, “Power to the people!” People power made great improvements to Colorado recently, and Boulder is now the first place in the country to remove a big obstacle to “people power” — but you wouldn’t know it from the media. I’m talking about direct democracy, in which the people can vote directly for laws as well as for representatives.
Polis’ online petition step could become a giant leap for humankind
Governor Polis took a small step towards the future on March 16 so political candidates can use Corona virus-free “electronic means” of signing and notarizing their nomination petitions, among other things, in his Executive Order D 2020 005: “I hereby suspend any notarization or handwritten signature requirements in any rules, regulations, or forms regarding the certification or acceptance of nomination, selection, or appointment pursuant to C.R.S. §§ 1-4-601, 12-203, 12-206 and direct the...
US states split on allowing citizen ballot initiatives
DAVID CRARY AP National Writer Every two years, citizens across the U.S. manage to place some eye-catching measures on state election ballots, posing questions to voters that can be divisive and sometimes historic. But more than half of states offer no such opportunity. Twenty-four states — mostly in the Western half of the country — have ways for citizens to bypass the Legislature by gathering signatures and taking proposals directly to voters.
ELECTION 2014 VOTE GUIDE
It’s that time again … time to exercise our greatest privilege and responsibility as citizens by voting. As has become the norm, we have Democratic, Republican, Independent, Green Party and Libertarian candidates on the ballot, along with a host of important ballot measures that will determine how we proceed on several important issues. Unfortunately, the issue many believe to be the most important for Colorado’s future will not be decided on this year’s ballot.
Vote Guide - Candidates
Mark Udall has done a lot of things right in the six years since he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He crafted the “Not My Boss’s Business Act” in response to the Supreme Court decision on Hobby Lobby’s case against paying for certain forms of birth control to say that women should continue to have access to affordable contraception.
Vote Guide - Ballot questions
Amendment 67, which proposes to apply definitions of “person” and “child” in Colorado’s criminal code and wrongful death act to include unborn humans, is a solution in search of a problem. For one, the legislature already responded to the issue it claims to address (the loss of a child by an eightmonths-pregnant woman after she was hit by a drunk driver) by passing laws that apply penalties to the unlawful termination of a pregnancy through criminal or negligent acts.
Who Killed The Vote on Fracking Part Two
In his testimony before the Committee on Ways and Means, Subcommittee on Trade on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, Daniel J. Weiss, senior fellow and director of climate strategy at the Center for American Progress, testified that “natural gas exports will increase gas prices. Increased natural gas exports lead to increased natural gas prices.
