Introduction Marine mammals forage underwater but must return to the surface to breathe. During diving, they face multiple physiological challenges, including limited oxygen availability and repeated exposure to hydrostatic pressure changes. These environmental changes elicit a suite of cardiorespiratory adjustments collectively known as the dive response (Scholander, 1963), which are critical for optimizing underwater foraging efficiency and ultimately survival.
