Introduction The introduction of biosimilars to the European market starting in 2006 1 provided less costly but equally effective alternatives to reference biologic treatments. These more affordable medications, with equivalent efficacy and comparable pharmacokinetic, safety and immunogenicity profiles as their reference products, help to stimulate competition and contribute to alleviate the economic burden on healthcare systems.
