The Long War #60
KYIV—Earlier this month, I spent a few days in the last two Ukrainian-held cities of Donbas. Driving on streets covered with anti-drone nets and along avenues lined with barbed wire, sometimes anxiously checking a drone detector able to broadcast a UAV’s video feed, I saw Kramatorsk and Sloviansk entering the last stage of this gradual process that turns a place of life and community into a concrete and steel battlefield.
The Long War #59
KYIV—Ukraine is currently going through a remarkable bout of optimism, something I don’t think we’ve seen since late 2022 and that I’ll discuss later in this issue. I wanted first to talk about a couple of interesting stories on Ukrainian politics that came out in the past few days.

The Long War #58
A drone strike in Starobilsk, police and mobilisation, migrant workers & more KYIV—A lot of people in Kyiv said that last weekend’s Russian attack on the capital had been the worst of the entire war, and they’re probably right. Going through a drone and missile attack is an intensely personal experience, one that is very slightly different for everyone.

The Long War #57
KYIV—What’s in this issue: eight verdicts published by tribunals across Ukraine and the wholly imperfect portrait of a society that emerges from these stories. Except for the very first one, all verdicts were issued in the past couple of weeks. Back in December last year, Ukraine’s Supreme Court ruled in a mundane inheritance case that did not register anywhere outside of the country’s judicial database.

The Long War #56
KYIV—It is now sunny and reasonably warm in the Ukrainian capital, warm enough to see some terraces populated again. The Long War #55
KYIV—Hello everyone and welcome to this first 2026 issue of The Long War, written and published from freezing, dark Kyiv. It is the coldest winter of the war and, speaking personally, the coldest Ukrainian winter since I first settled in the country back in 2018. Until maybe a week or two ago, there was still a tug-of-war in many people’s minds between the gloom of the current, harsh circumstances and the nostalgia-infused joy of a ‘real’ sunny winter, not seen for close to a decade.
