How this one Affirmation Grounds me when my Energy is Leaking.
This year has made me learn a lot about myself, and the ways in which energy can leak out of my body without my permission. What’s an energy leak? It’s when we feel tired, run-down, depleted, and forgetful of who we are and what our purpose is, because our energy is wrapped up in matters that aren’t ours to invest in. We forget to be in our body, and our hearts connect more outwardly rather than inwardly.
Why Having a Definite Chief Aim in Life is Necessary.
View this post on Instagram Lately, I’ve been on a quest to understand what it means to be successful and how to find the stamina for it. I’ve been moving away from self-help books where the narrative is around embracing vulnerability, and I’m more interested in how to have spiritual and mental tenacity, how to find deep strength within.
Rituals to cultivate a Healthy Mindset if you Live Alone.
View this post on Instagram I’ve been living on my own now for two years. It’s been a character-building experience that while I recommend for everyone to try at least once in they life, I’m also aware it doesn’t come without its challenges. My experience of living alone started on the brink of the pandemic. Just a few months before COVID-19 hit, my sister, who was my housemate, moved out to London and I stayed in Australia.
Are you really a People Pleaser or is it just High Agreeability?
All too often, I see people-pleasing being talked about in a negative light, and rightly so—It’s unhealthy. No one wants to keep pleasing others till they’re consumed and drained, with no energy left for themselves. Your cup never stays full when you’re in a chronic people-pleasing mode. But you feel threatened by the idea of saying no and hurting someone’s feelings. Will they walk away? Will they perceive you as cold? Will they not know that deep down your intentions are generous?
The Best Podcasts I’ve come across in 2021.
View this post on Instagram I’ve never been one for podcasts. I used to be more of a visual person; give me something to see or read or hold. But since late last year, and particularly this year, I’ve had a newfound appreciation for podcasts. I think during the pandemic and with being isolated at home, especially since I lived on my own—I craved company. And what better way to have that than by feeling like there’s a conversation happening in your own room.
What a Changed Woman looks like.
I’ve noticed old friends and acquaintances holding previous assumptions they’ve made about who I am, assumptions that are no longer true. I don’t fit into these boxes anymore. I’ve moved away from my hometown in Egypt almost six years ago and moved to Australia, how can anyone expect me to be the same person? Yet, it seems some people in my circle still seem to operate on old ideas of who I am and what I used to struggle with.
We were made for Uncertain Times.
I’ve been on a journey of self-becoming that hasn’t been rift-free or linear by any measure. I think most of us understand this experience. When our intended path is met with the realistic path and they both sit down and have a talk—and It’s a hard conversation. I’ve been through lows and highs so cyclical that I’ve often wondered if consistency has left the chat in a “Bye, Felicia” kind of way. It seems like the only constant is change these days.
Why Dating An Atheist Will Never Work For Me.
In my late twenties now, I’m seeing myself slowly emerging from the ambiguity of dating. Slowly beginning to see more clearly what I want in a man and what I don’t want. While this is something that is continuously changing as we grow and evolve, that diameter between being experimental and being sure-footed is shrinking. There’s a sense of ease in feeling that I’m a few steps closer to knowing what I would like in a partner.
This “Groove is in the Heart” Cover Just Made my Day.
I was scrolling through some news this morning and, to my delight, I came across this old 90s tune that I used to listen to all the time in school. “Groove is in the heart” is such an iconic dance-pop tune that makes you want to get up and boogie. This new cover song came up on my instagram feed, posted by Triple J, a poplar radio station in Australia. The band covering it, Client Liaison, hail from Melbourne.
Going Beyond Self-Care and Into the Art of Self-Affection.
We see the term “self-care” being thrown around like confetti these days. Everyone’s practicing it or hashtagging it on social media with their evening glass of wine or cup of tea, professing an allegiance to this habit of nurturing one’s spirit after being rundown by a day’s work. It’s an opposition and an act of rebellion in the face of being consumed by the tentacles of capitalism.
Know Thyself: Take This Insightful Personality Test by Dr. Helen Fisher.
View this post on Instagram A few weeks ago, I tuned into an episode from the popular podcast, “Sex with Emily,” on Spotify. I began listening to this podcast out of sheer curiosity about who this sex therapist, Emily, was. Her face popped up on my Instagram feed a couple of times and I liked her content. It seemed refreshing and sex-positive in a way that felt supportive and nourishing and free of kink-shaming.
7 Things Heartbreak can Awaken.
You think that heartbreak won’t happen to you again when you’ve learned your lessons from previous relationships. But pain comes back and peels another layer of yourself you didn’t know existed. It’s been a few days now and I’m fresh off the heartbreak train, or maybe I’m in my last few stops. Trying to come to terms with a relationship that ended before it has even begun is a strange place to be.
In Memory of Nawal El Saadawi: An Iconic Egyptian Feminist & Writer.
“They said, “You are a savage and dangerous woman. I am speaking the truth. And the truth is savage and dangerous.” ~Nawal El Saadawi The world lost a trailblazing icon on March 21, 2021. Nawal El Saadawi, a feminist author, doctor, activist, and prolific thinker has died at the age of 89. Many refer to her as the “Simone De Beauvoir” of the Arab World, but to view her in a Eurocentric light like that diminishes her power as one of the greatest feminist writers and activists of our time.
What I Tell Myself Each Time Failure Strikes Again.
Coming to terms with our own failure isn’t easy. Failing once is one thing. But failing a few times at the same thing brings with it a whole heap of questions: am I doing the right thing? Am I in the right place? Is it a sign from the universe to stop and change course? I got my results yesterday for an important board registration exam that I did last week—and I failed. Again. The news hit me like a ton of bricks. This physiotherapy registration certificate was my ticket to freedom in many ways.
Alternative Suggestions to Ghosting if you’re Not Interested after the First Date.
You see them once, you think it’s going great. You exchange smiles, you ask curious questions about each other, they appear interested in what you have to say. He buys you a drink; you get the next round. It’s looking good. The energy is there. You might even begin noticing small quirks about him that are uniquely charming. You wonder who this person really is deep down. After all, you’re just getting an outward glimpse of who this person is when you meet them the first time.
An Open Letter to the Man who's Emotionally Unavailable.
I refuse to be manipulated. I refuse to be kept in your vague affections, your unrequited attention, your distant love. I refuse to be with an emotionally detached, emotionally unavailable—and as someone once so dearly phrased it—an emotionally constipated man. I refuse to allow you to interfere with my energy and my boundaries. I refuse to allow you to think that you have control over how the story of my life plays out. I refuse to be kept as an option. I refuse you defining my worth.

3 Signs that Told me the Burnout is Real.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been feeling a little despondent and low. Even though I’m working, thriving, and connected to a basic sense of meaning and purpose, I couldn’t shake off this feeling like shadows were pulling at my feet. Something was wrong. I started getting this sinking feeling that the life I’m living isn’t what I really want deep down. I wondered if my life choices so far had, perhaps, been mistakes. I’ve never been too anxious about the future.
“Don’t (Just) Vote” is Music used for Social Justice the Right Way.
This has to be one of the best and coolest collaborative tracks I’ve ever heard on a political issue. We’re usually used to music when it comes to heartbreak, joy, and everything in between. But when music is used in a political sphere, it can also inspire revolutions and social movements. It can touch us in a social and relational way that unifies us all behind one cause.
When I Longed for you, I Devalued Myself.
When you know there’s a person out there for you, it’s a feeling that runs deep. Almost like you’ve both met before in a dream, but agreed to forget this meeting ever happened, just so it can happen again and again. What if we fall in love, let each other go, and mutually forget so we can repeatedly live in a newfound feeling when we return to each other’s embrace? What if I keep having you and losing you, but I never know about it?
6 Valuable Lessons I Learned from trying Dating Apps.
In today’s dating culture, it’s so easy to swipe right or left. It takes a second to decide if someone is worth a longer, detailed scroll to find out more about who they are, or if they’re a definite pass. We easily judge by the quality of photos they have, or the witty words that they use. Our internal monologue is wired to ask: Did they make us laugh? Did they intrigue our brains a little bit? What’s their taste in music or film like? Do they seem to have their sh*t together?

6 Mindful Rituals to Close Out 2020 & Welcome the New Year.
I was talking to a friend recently about how important it’s been, at the end of each year, to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned. I’ve done this ritual every year since I was 18. I used to do it in writing, back when Tumblr was cool (although I still think it is), and it has helped form a sort of organized shelving of my thoughts and situations that have happened throughout this time.
APPRENTICE Why I Ditched Resolutions for Rituals
I was talking to a friend recently about how important it’s been for me to take a few hours at the end of each year to reflect on the lessons I’ve learnt. I’ve done this ritual every year since I was eighteen. I used to do it in writing, back when tumblr was cool (although I still think it is), and it has helped form a sort of organized shelving of my thoughts and of situations that have happened throughout this time.
