Your compiler had a great-uncle he never knew, but dearly wishes he had. His name was Hugh Henderson and he lived in Brooks his entire life, which was from late 1889 until early 1961. Serving as postmaster of Brooks for thirty-seven years (1922-59), he was First World War veteran and a well-known man around town. Uncle Hugh was an extrovert of the first water, a drinker who was sober as a church warden till Saturday night, but who would then cut loose with an exuberance that was not tamable.

Since taking over The Citizen, I have had a simple goal when it comes to our local nonprofits: I want us to partner with every one we reasonably can. Not just cover them. Partner with them. Straight out of college, I moved here to join Operation Mobilization in Tyrone, a global Christian missions organization, where I volunteered in public relations and communications.

Dear Margar-etiquette, My husband and I recently had dinner with two other couples. One couple was passing through town, and another couple invited them to stop for dinner. We were invited to join the group later. When the bill arrived, the other couples were deep in conversation, and my husband and I suddenly realized we weren’t sure how to handle the check. We finally told the server to separate it by couple, but afterward I wondered whether we had done the right thing.
