Throughout his career, F. Chris Garcia continued to engage in research and publication while also taking on administrative responsibilities. He was the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1987 to 1990, returning to the political science faculty afterward. However, his expertise was repeatedly sought, leading to his appointment as interim Provost twice and eventually as the University of New Mexico president from 2002 to 2003.
