Evidence of direct methane production from long-chain fatty acids by thermophilic Archaeoglobi
Abstract Methanogenic degradation of long-chain fatty acids has traditionally been thought to occur through syntrophic partnerships between fatty acid-degrading bacteria and methanogenic archaea. However, recent genomic evidence suggests that certain archaea may independently carry out the entire process. Here we report the enrichment of an archaeon from the class Archaeoglobi, Candidatus Methanoglobus sphaerolipidus DLY3, from hot spring sediments in Tengchong, China.
CagA promotes gastric cancer stemness and metastasis via DNMT1-mediated epigenetic silencing of BEX1
Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) critically contributes to gastric cancer (GC) pathogenesis, though its epigenetic control of cancer stemness is incompletely characterized. This study establishes that CagA enhances self-renewal capacity and metastatic potential in GC cells by elevating DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) expression.

Launching the IUCN Microbial Conservation Specialist Group as a global safeguard for microbial biodiversity - Nature Microbiology
Despite its importance1,2, microbial life is largely absent from global conservation frameworks3,4. Launched in July 2025, the Microbial Conservation Specialist Group (MCSG) was established as a Species Survival Commission (SSC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The IUCN is the world’s leading authority in environmental science and policy, renowned for shaping conservation priorities across governments, non-governmental organizations and international treaties.
Asgard Arf GTPases can act as membrane-associating molecular switches with the potential to function in organelle biogenesis - Nature Communications
Abstract Inward membrane budding, i.e., the bending of membrane towards the cytosol, is essential for forming and maintaining eukaryotic organelles. In eukaryotes, Arf GTPases initiate this inward budding. Our research shows that Asgard archaea genomes encode putative Arf proteins (AArfs). AArfs possess structural elements characteristic of their eukaryotic counterparts. When expressed in yeast and mammalian cells, some AArfs displayed GTP-dependent membrane targeting.
Uncovering dynamic transcriptional regulation of methanogenesis via single-cell imaging of archaeal gene expression - Nature Communications
Abstract Archaeal methanogenesis is a dynamic process regulated by various cellular and environmental signals. However, understanding this regulation is technically challenging due to the difficulty of measuring gene expression dynamics in individual archaeal cells.
Author Correction: Thermophilic Hadarchaeota grow on long-chain alkanes in syntrophy with methanogens - Nature Communications
Correction to: Nature Communications https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-50883-z, published online 02 August 2024 The original version of this Article contained the following errors: The Acknowledgements section included an incorrect grant number (‘323250002’). The correct number is ‘32325002’. The Gibbs free-energy calculations presented in Equations (1–4) incorrectly read ‘−105 kJ/mol hexadecane’, ‘189 kJ/mol hexadecane’, ‘−21 kJ/mol acetate’ and ‘−7 kJ/mol hydrogen’.
Microbial solutions must be deployed against climate catastrophe - Nature Microbiology
This paper is a call to action. By publishing concurrently across journals like an emergency bulletin, we are not merely making a plea for awareness about climate change. Instead, we are demanding immediate, tangible steps that harness the power of microbiology and the expertise of researchers and policymakers to safeguard the planet for future generations.
Matrine alkaloids modulating DNA damage repair in chemoresistant non-small cell lung cancer cells - BMC Cancer
To obtain DNA repair-related factors, a search was conducted in the GeneCards database (https://www.genecards.org/) using the keyword “DNA repair.” Additionally, the Phenolyzer database (https://phenolyzer.wglab.org/) was utilized to predict phenotypic targets associated with DNA repair. The study was conducted up to February 1, 2024. The results from both databases were sorted in descending order based on scores, and the top 100 genes were selected for further analysis.

Globally distributed Myxococcota with photosynthesis gene clusters illuminate the origin and evolution of a potentially chimeric lifestyle - Nature Communications
Abstract Photosynthesis is a fundamental biogeochemical process, thought to be restricted to a few bacterial and eukaryotic phyla. However, understanding the origin and evolution of phototrophic organisms can be impeded and biased by the difficulties of cultivation. Here, we analyzed metagenomic datasets and found potential photosynthetic abilities encoded in the genomes of uncultivated bacteria within the phylum Myxococcota.

Genomic and enzymatic evidence of acetogenesis by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea
Abstract Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) mediated by anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) is the primary process that provides energy to cold seep ecosystems by converting methane into inorganic carbon. Notably, cold seep ecosystems are dominated by highly divergent heterotrophic microorganisms. The role of the AOM process in supporting heterotrophic population remains unknown.
