What happens when home is two places? For Jose Fermoso, who was born in Oakland but bred partly in Mexico, it sounds a little romantic and hella fun. The fall and spring months were replete with family fiestas, stories, and the crush-inducing heroines of Televisa. The rest of the year he spent in Oakland, watching A’s games and eating Loard’s ice cream, scrambling over the rocks of America’s national parks.

California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control has reached a $1.5 million settlement with Radius Recycling, the West Oakland scrap metal company it accused of environmental and fire-prevention violations. Formerly known as Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., Radius has been repeatedly cited, fined, and sued for violating environmental laws, including spewing toxic waste and emissions, such as zinc and lead byproducts, and for causing illegal fires.

Lakeshore Avenue bike lane pushed back to spring 2027

The highly anticipated upgrade of Lakeshore Avenue next to Lake Merritt, which will add nearly a mile of fully protected bicycle track, may finally wrap up in the Spring of 2027. Construction is many months behind schedule, according to the city, because when crews began work on the road, which also included improvements to the gutter and sidewalk, they found the pavement base layer was more damaged than anticipated and required fresh engineering review and a redesign.
