Introduction Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) are a diverse group of tree root-associated fungal symbionts. They help trees recruit offspring (Bennett et al., 2017; Liang et al., 2020), take up nutrients (Read & Perez-Moreno, 2003), and displace plant pathogens (Buscot et al., 1992), with effects that scale from the individual tree to entire forest functioning (Phillips et al., 2013; Anthony et al., 2024). A key driver of EMF activity is the growth and exploration of extraradical mycelium.
