Reopening the World: Responsibly reopening Greece
Greece surprised the world by emerging as a paradigm of crisis management in its response to the coronavirus. Despite a decade of contraction and austerity, an aging population (EU’s second oldest after Italy), and a resource-constrained healthcare system (8 percent GDP spending vs. the EU’s 10 percent), the government’s strategy has been a textbook case of swift and responsible action against a public health crisis. That same strategy should also guide Greece’s efforts to reopen.

How Greece can reopen without ruining its coronavirus containment success
In early February, if someone predicted that Greece’s response to the coronavirus pandemic would be stronger than that of Germany, France, the U.K., and Italy, they might have been accused of spending too much time with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. Low expectations seem justified given Greece’s failures during the last decade’s financial crisis. But facts are facts.

Is Europe headed toward a post-American future?
The vision for Europe’s future has become increasingly contested and uncertain due to Brexit, the rise of populist parties, and a United States that is often more critical than cooperative. On June 13, Brookings’s Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE) held two panels to explore the future of Europe and the trans-Atlantic relationship, as part of the Brookings-Robert Bosch Foundation Transatlantic Initiative.
The history and future of Britain’s Labour Party
British politics have come under the spotlight (again) in the wake of Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May’s resignation, and the upcoming Conservative Party leadership election. A key player that is expected to influence the future of British politics is the Labour Party, which has been led by Jeremy Corbyn since September 2015.

On February 7, Foreign Policy at Brookings hosted former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni for an Alan and Jane Batkin International Leaders Forum. Gentiloni served as prime minister of Italy from December 2016 to June 2018 and recently joined Brookings as a distinguished fellow in the Foreign Policy program.
On the record: The U.S. administration’s actions on Russia
The Trump administration’s policy actions often seemed at odds with the President’s rhetoric. To set the record on policy actions, rather than rhetoric, Alina Polyakova and Filippos Letsas tracked the administration’s concrete actions on Russia from 2017 to 2019. Trump Administration actions on Russia Total number of policy actions: 52 *Policy actions in black, relevant events in red below.
On the record: The U.S. administration’s actions on Russia
On July 24, 2018, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testified on U.S. policy toward Russia before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He listed the administration’s actions on Russia, which include 213 sanctions against Russian individuals and entities, approval of weapons sales to Ukraine, expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats, closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle, and the National Security Strategy that identifies Russia—alongside China—as an adversarial competitor to the United States.
Ireland’s Taoiseach on the challenge of Brexit and the power of small countries
“In our long history as a country we’ve experienced famine, oppression, sectarian conflicts, economic crisis, and mass immigration,” Leo Varadkar, Taoiseach of Ireland, noted in a St. Patrick’s Day week speech at Brookings as part of the Alan and Jane Batkin International Leaders Forum. To that list can be added the present challenge of managing the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, and its impact on the Irish border and the Irish economy.
