Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Story migration at the Telegraph website, if that counts. Rubbish day rate, but was grateful - and it led to my first 'proper' job

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Not very well however. Thankfully, I'm of a generation where I never needed to for work... although I do touch type 85 words a minute.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

The Globelink news team.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Impartiality, integrity, telling the story without becoming the story.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I love a good PR twitter cock up. Social media 'experts' unfathomably convincing orgs to get a good beating. #whyI'mvotingukip in particular.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email. My phone goes every 5 mins as it is - if I answered them all I'd never get any work done. Also - mobile in emergency only please :-)

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop, destop PC, iPhone, iPad, DSLR, Marantz, Z5 camera, Evernote, iTalk, Cardmunch, Simplenote, Photoshop, FCP, Bylines, all things Google

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. When I get a chance to browse.

Who do you wish followed you?

God. The real one. Then I'd finally be proved wrong and know he exists. Or Buffy. Again the real one. If she existed...

Why did you become a journalist?

That's a long story
