National ICA brown bread baking final takes place in Co Louth

Known as one of the most mouth-watering events on the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA) calendar, the National Brown Bread Baking Competition final gives home bakers from across the country the opportunity to showcase their talents in the hope of being crowned champion. Seasoned bakers from far and wide were up at the crack of dawn this morning to deliver their freshly baked bread to the ICA headquarters, An Grianán, in Termonfeckin, Co Louth.

Phoenix Park reopens the historic Magazine Fort to the public

The Office of Public Works will officially reopen the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park today. The historic site, designed by military engineer John Corneille, was built between 1734 and 1736 as a military storage facility. Ammunition and gunpowder, which had previously been stored in Dublin Castle, were moved to the fort after it was deemed a safer location outside the city. The fort later played a significant role in the Easter Rising, when it was raided on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916.
