New coalition plans to tackle Africa's growing burden of stroke
Africa is currently experiencing a changing pattern of diseases and deaths. The continent faces a double burden of infectious diseases and rapid escalation of non-communicable diseases such as stroke and heart disease. These conditions are driven by factors like ageing populations, changes in dietary habits, and rising rates of hypertension, physical inactivity, smoking, diabetes, raised cholesterol, alcohol abuse and obesity. Stroke is a leading cause of disability, death, and dementia worldwide.
Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study | Breast Cance
Key Points Question What is the cancer burden over time at the global and national levels, measured in incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and how does it compare with other diseases?
Global, regional, and national burden of epilepsy, 1990-2016: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016
Summary Background Seizures and their consequences contribute to the burden of epilepsy because they can cause health loss (premature mortality and residual disability). Data on the burden of epilepsy are needed for health-care planning and resource allocation. The aim of this study was to quantify health loss due to epilepsy by age, sex, year, and location using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study.
The Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases Among US States, 1990-2016
Question How does the total burden of cardiovascular diseases vary across US states? Findings In this study using the Global Burden of Disease methodology, large disparities in total burden of CVD were found between US states despite marked improvements in CVD burden. Meaning These estimates can provide a benchmark for states working to focus on key risk factors, improve health care quality, and lower health care costs.
Global, regional, and national burden of neurological disorders during 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015
IntroductionJump to SectionIntroductionMethodsResultsDiscussionSupplementary MaterialReferencesIn 2006, WHO emphasised the importance of neurological disorders (a group that at the time included epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine, stroke, poliomyelitis, tetanus, meningitis, and Japanese encephalitis) for public health,1 and estimated that these disorders accounted for 6·3% of the global disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs).
New Strategy to Reduce the Global Burden of Stroke
|
The socioeconomic and health effect of stroke and other noncommunicable disorders (NCDs) that share many of the same risk factors with stroke, such as heart attack, dementia, and diabetes mellitus, is huge and increasing.1–4 Collectively, NCDs account for 34.5 million deaths (66% of deaths from all causes)3 and 1344 million disability-adjusted life years lost worldwide in 2010.2 The burden of NCDs is likely to burgeon given the aging of the world’s population and the epidemiological...
