Nigeria’s most pressing health risks are no longer confined to hospitals or clinics. They are emerging at the intersection of human activity, animal systems, and environmental change. Flooded communities can accelerate the spread of waterborne diseases; the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance is making once-treatable illnesses harder to manage; and the increasing frequency of zoonotic infections is driving the transmission of diseases between animals and humans.

The recent disclosure that just ₦36 million, not billion, was released from a ₦218 billion federal health capital allocation in 2025 captures the crisis with brutal clarity. Chronic under-execution, erratic release patterns, and deeply unfulfilled budgetary commitments have become structural features of health financing.

In Nigeria, people die not only from disease but also from delay. A woman in childbirth, a child struck in a hit-and-run incident, several adults critically injured in a bus crash, a driver who dozes off and veers off the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon below, commuters and innocent bystanders caught in a fuel explosion – too many perish not because care is impossible, but because it never arrives in time.
