Council speaks out as plans to buy homes for Afghan refugees sparks debate

A council has issued a statement after it revealed plans to buy properties to house refugees. Arun District Council is planning to buy 18 properties as part of a programme designed to help resettle Afghan refugees and provide temporary accommodation for the homeless. Ten of the homes would be allocated for use as temporary accommodation, with eight designated for refugees who are currently occupying bridging hotels.

Everything police had to say about pepper-spraying anti-fascists at Brighton protest

Police have said incapacitant spray was used during protests. On Saturday, June 13, anti-immigration group South East Patriots held a march through Brighton city centre as part of a 'Stop the Boats' campaign. In response, a counter protest 'Carnival Against Fascism' was organised. Throughout the day, counter protesters moved across the city aiming to block the far right from marching.

Pictures show progress of project to restore one of world's longest structures

Brighton and Hove City Council has been undertaking work to restore a section of the Madeira Terrace on Brighton seafront. The work will see 28 of the arches between the Royal Crescent steps and Concorde 2 restored, as well as the installation of a new lift and full replacement of the upper deck. Running to a length of nearly three thousand feet, Madeira Terrace is the longest continuous cast iron structure in the UK and, by some estimations, the world.
