My Coffee Ritual
I have an unhealthy obsession with the act of brewing coffee in my Mr. Coffee electric drip coffee machine. Why do I prefer this method to a single-serving Keurig or buying coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks on the way to work? For one, nostalgia tugs at me, as I remember my deceased parents and how they taught me how to make coffee. When I was young, my dad worked as a salesman at the local Sears store, while my mom started her banking career on the teller line.
Comfort Objects - The Millions
On an August 2013 episode of The New Yorker’s Fiction Podcast, author Donald Antrim read and discussed Denis Johnson’s short story “Work.” Antrim said he remembered the liberation he associated with reading the story when it was published in The New Yorker in 1988: “At the time, I was trying to write stories myself, but they were somewhat dead and I think I felt a little lost…I think reading Denis Johnson had to have something to do with a sense of permission, a sense of freedom to do...
Bear Chili - The Cook's Cook
A hunter must have a diverse diet and it’s important that he or she be prepared to hunt whatever is in season. I am a meat eater and over the years have been blessed with numerous successes harvesting food for my family. One of the best sources of good meat is black bear. The heat of summer is gone, winter comes. But before the long, cold, dark nights blanket the land, we have a feast of fall awaiting all our senses. Our eyes see the changing colors in the trees edging the field. The wind cools our cheeks, bringing up a rosy glow.
Mastering the Art of Raw Baking - The Cook's Cook
Raw baking—isn’t that a contradiction? Well, in fact it may be lying a bit in saying that something baked can be raw. I make desserts, but technically speaking, I don’t bake anything. However, you could call my creations something similar to baked goods, since I have become a little bit famous for my raw vegan cakes, pies, tarts and other sweet treats. Another question: how could a cake be raw?

The Superhero Saga of Brooklyn’s Weirdest Burger Joint
Steve Bala can remember the day back in 1982 when he unwrapped his first two “G.I. Joe” action figures. A few weeks later, “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” comic books premiered on shelves, and it felt like destiny. When the Saturday morning cartoon hit the airwaves, the battle cry “Yo Joe!” entered his heart through his eardrums. Twenty-six years later, the trademark war whoop of the Joes still took Steve’s breath away.
