AI is gradually giving a new complexion to public safety by shifting approaches from reactive to proactive, in a field where there are a growing number of use cases. AI is also becoming more integral to underpinning the capabilities of other technologies like cloud computing, video analytics, edge computing, big data, robotics, drones, sensors and mobile tech. Across these technologies, public safety applications deliver good results for both the public and private sectors.

AI is undoubtedly helping to positively transform the world in many different ways, yet some of the data and tools used to fashion AI contain various biases, including those that can reinforce gender discrimination and have negative impacts on women. Africa, as a somewhat late adopter of AI, is presently placed in a unique position in which it can turn the tide against different AI biases, including those that harm women.
