The task of ports economic regulation is indeed an enormous one. It is even more so considering the peculiarity of the ports system, the Nigerian factor that has permeated into the operations of the sector like every other. The maritime industry is governed by international regulations but this is often altered by all, either as shipping service providers or consumers in one way or the other. This has remained the bane of the sector for decades.
Nigeria: Resetting the War Against Piracy
In international trade what determines the cost of shipment is the level of peace in the country and continent involved in every transaction. If conference liners decide to take the risk to ship goods to a country under security challenges, the shippers must be ready to bear the cost. NSC: Jime and The Task Ahead
Barrister, Hon. Emmanuel Lyambee Jime July 25, (THEWILL) – For the ports economic regulator, it is indeed a new dawn. By Francis Ugwoke At such a time of dwindling oil fortunes and resultant effect on the economy, the nation’s maritime industry is considered as key in filling some gaps. Nigeria: Who Is Afraid of Cargo Tracking Note?
The ugly scenario in the nation's maritime industry leaves much to be desired. To some extent, it would appear like a survival of the fittest. The fraudulent practices involve all layers of shipping, from the point of purchases and loading to the port of destination. If you are in the system, it cuts across board, from the providers of shipping services to the consumers. The culprits are the shipping lines/ agents, shippers (importers) - their agents, unscrupulous customs officers and others.
Nigeria: An Umpire and Drive for Ports Efficiency
The nation's shipping industry is one of conflict of interests. There is the interest of government, the shipping service providers and the shippers, the owners of cargos. This scenario therefore presents a herculean task for the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) as an umpire, the ports economic regulator. The NSC is saddled with a wide range of statutory responsibilities that are aimed at achieving the ease of doing business at the ports.
