It really is hard for anyone to defend the practice of, say, a deli adding a five percent credit card charge or an apartment owner charging $40 to clean out a refrigerator. The governor cited both those examples Monday in announcing her looming crackdown on junk fees. Officially, these are so-called convenience fees and handling fees tacked onto everyday bills.

Tom Kean Jr. Friday night on Bill Maher's HBO show, Real Time. "Are you OK Tom? Are you curled up in a ball?" So asked Maher, a Bergen County native, while an unflattering photo of the absent congressman was displayed behind him. What was even worse for Kean was the company he kept.

Most New Jersey sport fans probably care more about the Knicks than the World Cup. That's just reality. And the schedule is not helping. The first World Cup match at "NYNJ Stadium" on Saturday coincides possibly with the Knicks winning the NBA championship later that evening. It's not hard to see which event is going to grab the most attention of average sport fans in the region. It's unlikely to be Brazil vs. Morocco.
