Filamentation-driven peripheral clustering of the inducible lysine decarboxylase is crucial for E. coli acid stress response
Abstract Bacteria have evolved numerous sophisticated acid stress response strategies to withstand fluctuating environmental pH, with enterobacterial inducible amino acid decarboxylases playing a major role. The lysine decarboxylase LdcI catalyses lysine-to-cadaverine conversion coupled to proton consumption and carbon dioxide release, thereby buffering cytoplasmic and extracellular pH.
The essential role of 2,4-dienoyl-CoA reductase for degradation of complex fatty acid mixtures
Abstract Fatty acids (FAs) can be used as carbon and energy source by most bacteria. FAs are very diverse and show variations in aliphatic chain length, degree and kind of branching, and number of double bonds. After their import in the cell and their activation by a thioester link to Coenzyme A, fatty acids are degraded by the beta-oxidation machinery constituted of the Fad proteins.
