1 INTRODUCTION Ensemble forecast systems are widely used to generate probabilistic weather and climate predictions at lead times of days to decades (e.g., Doblas-Reyes et al., 2009; Molteni et al., 1996; Palmer et al., 2005; Smith et al., 2019; Vitart & Robertson, 2018). The origins, motivations, and practicalities of ensemble forecasting are described comprehensively by Lewis (2005) and Leutbecher and Palmer (2008).
