What was your first job as a journalist?
My first "paid" job was as a web designer for the Syracuse Constitution, a small community paper. Before this, I founded a college magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. In high school, I wrote essays on an electric typewriter.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is democratizing the news. Anyone can now post news, which means the need for professional integrity has never been higher.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I would say Lois Lane. No good reason; just the first name that popped up in my head.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means answering questions that may not have easy answers. It means be a teacher, an entertainer, an ethicist, and an advocate all in one.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Google Drive and Microsoft Office. Tool-wise, I rely heavily on internet-research and I am starting to use Twitter more often.
What's your favorite social network?
I use Twitter and Facebook. I would not say one is my favorite; they are just tools.
Who do you wish followed you?
I wished the world followed me. More specifically, I wish for people that value and support my journalism to follow me.
Why did you become a journalist?
I enjoy writing and I enjoy knowing what I write helped someone in some small way. I have always enjoyed learning new things.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My high school did not have a school newspaper when I attended.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm proud of them all.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write about what you love, and love what you write. Your readers will appreciate your passion and seek it out.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Late afternoon, before the close of business.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I feel that all pitches are valid. I haven't had a "bad" pitch.
What's your favorite drink?
Diet Pepsi. I know, it's bad for me.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading or playing with my nephew.
