Use of psychotropic drugs among young people in Chile: challenges for research and health services from a historical–socioanthropological perspective

The growing use of psychotropic drugs — such as stimulants, antidepressants and anxiolytics — whether medically prescribed or used recreationally, represents a serious global concern among youth and university students. Recent studies in the USA1 and in some European countries2,3 report worrisome prevalence rates and underscore important implications for both public health and mental health. In Chile, psychopharmaceutical consumption has similarly become an increasingly pervasive issue.
