Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job as a journalist was to write a story about project updates pertaining to a local library that was undergoing renovations.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

When I was a child, I would travel to my grandmother's house and use her typewriter to write old-fashioned messages and notes.

How is social media changing news?

There are many ways to cut the pie. The news cycle is endless and not just for prime time television. Consumers are simply freer to choose.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A seeker of truth. Someone who lives to tell the stories that are pertinent for the sake of the public interest.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter is the bedrock in the age of digital journalism.

Why did you become a journalist?

I find passion in covering the communities that I call home. All of these places mean more to me than subject lines for any of my stories.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We actually had a literary magazine instead of an actual newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am most proud of my eight-month coverage on the Cayuga Nation, which garnered federal recognition from the U.S. Department of Interior.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I am either reading about poetry, politics or other timeless pieces of literature for leisure. I also enjoy listening to music on the radio.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

At the local news level, I have found that our communities truly care about the facts and truth; and they will go to lengths to find both.
