What was your first job as a journalist?
I was an intern at Media Research Center in summer 2012.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is becoming a major source of news consumption. Over 2/3 of Americans now obtain news from social media.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Reach out to pitch me and I'll consider your request.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Adobe Creative Cloud--especially PhotoShop and Premiere Pro. I also use WordPress for blogs I write for.
What's your favorite social network?
I love Twitter, but have grown to love Instagram because it's a storytelling platform.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote about a disabled man in Maine, a gun owner, who nearly lost his home after being robbed. Recently, a bill was named in his honor.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read multiple sources of differing views. If you have a bias, admit it. And you don't have to go to J-school to succeed in journalism.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Whenever the topic is appropriate. I would only like to speak on subjects I'm well-versed on.
What's your favorite drink?
A White Russian.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I'm out fishing, shooting guns, hiking, or exploring Washington DC/Virginia.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy reading Field & Stream or Outdoor Life.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
People assume I regurgitate traditional Republican talking points. I got beyond the soundbites and provide original conservative commentary.
