It should come as no surprise that women are very different from one another. With so many unique cultures it's often hard to find common ground with someone on the other side of the globe. Germantown native Molly Hayward experienced this firsthand when she visited Kenya last year. She was on a nonprofit mission focused on aiding women's health in developing countries. One day while the young local girls were heading off to school, she noticed that one girl had stayed behind.

Mary Ellen Mark, an artist known for her incredible humanist photography, passed away Monday in New York City. A rep confirmed the news Tuesday morning. She was 75. Mark was born (March 20, 1940) and raised in Elkins Park. She graduated from Cheltenham High School ("I was head cheerleader," she told the Inquirer's Stephen Rea in 2008).

Nine-time Grammy winning musician John Legend will be returning to his alma mater, University of Pennsylvania, to speak at the institution's 258th commencement ceremony on Monday, May 19. Legend, whose birth name is John Stephens, was a 1999 graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences who holds a degree in English with a concentration in African-American lit and culture.
