House Passes Bill to Narrow Failing Bank Merger Rules Original

The acquisition of a failing bank by a large bank would have to meet additional criteria to be approved by banking regulators under a bill passed by the House on Tuesday. Under the bill (H.R. 6556), passed by voice vote, regulators would have to determine that a merger between a large bank and a failing bank is necessary to prevent significant economic disruption, and ensure that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation hasn’t received any other bids from smaller qualified banks.

Penny Minting Would Halt Under Bill Passed by House Original

The bill (H.R. 3074), which passed by voice vote, would codify a Trump administration policy. The president ordered the Treasury last year to halt production of the one-cent coin because of increasing production costs.

The topline discretionary authorization, which covers the Pentagon, Energy Department nuclear programs, and other national security activities, is equal to the White House budget request, according to the Senate Armed Services Committee’s report on the bill.
