1 Introduction Terrestrial water storage (TWS) encompasses all water stored on land, including snow and ice, soil moisture, groundwater, surface water, and biomass (Tapley et al., 2004). Changes in TWS reflect the net effect of climate and anthropogenic activities on the water cycle, making it a key indicator of water resources (Deng et al., 2023; Zhong et al., 2024). Thus, TWS has been adopted as an official essential climate variable (ECV) by the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS, 2022).
