NAL crystallised in four different crystal forms from the same crystallisation conditions, and in the same drops (100 mM Tris-HCl pH 8.0–8.2, 200 mM Na acetate, 18–22% w/v PEG3350). It was not possible to discriminate between the four crystal forms of NAL solely by inspection of the crystal morphology (Fig. S1).

The ordered assembly of tau protein into abnormal filamentous inclusions underlies many human neurodegenerative diseases1. Tau assemblies seem to spread through specific neural networks in each disease2, with short filaments having the greatest seeding activity3. The abundance of tau inclusions strongly correlates with disease symptoms4.
