*Editor's Note: The following essay was written by Professor Gary Murphy of the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University as part of the Irish Institute of Boston College's guest essay series. As one of Ireland’s most leftwing politicians, there has been much speculation as to the significance and impact of Catherine Connolly’s victory in the recent presidential election.

Gary Murphy: Can the boy wonder of Fine Gael now show political maturity? - The Currency
On the night of Friday 16 June 1989 the Taoiseach, Charles Haughey, went to bed in his north Dublin estate, Abbeville, depressed and downhearted. He had spent the day watching the results of the general election come in with increasing anxiety. When he called the snap election three weeks earlier, Fianna Fáil stood at close to 50 per cent in the polls and Haughey saw an opportunity to finally gain that overall majority which had eluded him since becoming the party’s leader in December 1979.
Gary Murphy: Shane Ross and the search for the real Mary Lou - The Currency
As 2022 winds to a close there is barely a pundit or political observer alive who does not think that Sinn Féin will be in power when the votes are counted after the next general election. Since the party’s extraordinary result in the February 2020 election it has strengthened its position as the state’s most popular party. Consistently polling in the mid 30 per cent range it holds what, even at this stage, looks like an unassailable lead over both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Gill Books - Biography - Haughey
With exclusive access to the Haughey archives, Gary Murphy presents a reassessment of Charles Haughey’s life and legacy. Saint or sinner? He was the most talented and influential politician of his generation, and his presence still looms over the Irish body politic, yet the very roots of his success – his charisma, his intelligence, his ruthlessness, his secrecy – have rendered almost impossible any objective evaluation of his life and work.

Call for tighter lobbying rules ‘fall on political deaf ears’
THE RECENT CONTROVERSY over the resignation from the Seanad of Michael D’Arcy to take up a position as head of the financial services group, the Irish Association of Investment Managers, has brought the issue of lobbying regulation back to the fore of Irish politics.

Fight Exploitation by Pub Companies
15,000 pubs in the U.K.are contractually "tied" to buying their beer from their pub company at sometimes double the price they could pay on the open market. This makes good pubs unviable, individual landlords and landladies bankrupt and restricts product and venue choice for pub goers. The Government legislated in 2016 to allow landlords and landladies to break free of the beer tie with these companies. They set-up the Pub's Code and the Pub's Code Adjudicator to manage the process.
