Blamed, shamed and at-risk: How have press representations of obesity responded to the COVID-19 pandemic?
There’s no question that all of us within society have been impacted in one way or another by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, it’s also the case that the health and wellbeing of certain groups have been particularly affected. A review of evidence on the disparities in the risks and outcomes of COVID-19 carried out by Public Health England suggests the virus has ‘replicated existing health inequalities and, in some cases, has increased them’.

How the right-wing press has weaponised the ability to speak English
Being able to speak English is considered by many to be an integral part of “being British”. Officially, it is a requirement for those applying for British citizenship. Yet the link between English and belonging is also clear in more everyday contexts, including, unfortunately, instances in which people are discriminated against – and even assaulted – for not speaking English in public. The UK’s 2011 Census included questions about language for the first time.

ABSTRACT Payday loans constitute one of the most rapidly expanding and controversial forms of consumer lending today. Payday lending – the selling of high-interest, short-term credit – has thrived following the decline of the traditional high street banking system and the reluctance of many mainstream credit services, following the 2007/2008 Global Financial Crisis, to lend to low-income earners.
