‘When the visible body is no longer the seer’: The phenomenology of perception and the clinical gaze in video consultations

INTRODUCTION The flesh is the body inasmuch as it is the visible seer, the audible hearer, the tangible touch—the sensitive sensible. (Merleau-Ponty, 1968: liv) The use of video-consultations increased exponentially during the COVID-19 crisis in the UK. ‘Remote by default’ became the key directive from the government and professionals were compelled to find ways to reach patients virtually (Beattie et al., 2020; Shaw et al., 2021; Sutherland et al., 2020; Webster, 2020; Wherton et al., 2021).

Staff attitudes towards video consultations were influenced by their own technical competence and confidence, their experience and knowledge (including personal knowledge of the patient and whether they themselves had actually tried using video consultations), their perceptions of quality and risk, the cognitive demands of different modalities, job satisfaction, and (lack of) role models. Practice staff varied in their digital experience , digital literacy, and confidence.
