Opinion: Alaskans will lose under proposed SNAP and Medicaid cuts
Have you ever spent hours on the phone to talk to someone at the Division of Public Assistance? Or know someone who has stood by months on their SNAP or Medicaid application status? Behind the scenes, there are public servants working incredibly hard to maintain Alaska’s safety net — a web of state and federal programs braided together. Federal funding comprises the core fibers that prevent Alaskans from going hungry or getting sick.
Opinion: 15 Years of the Affordable Care Act - and why Alaskans must keep moving forward
I rarely went to the doctor or the dentist when I was growing up. My parents were health care workers who worked day and night at assisted living homes, caring for Alaska’s elderly. They made too much for Medicaid, but as small business owners, they couldn’t afford health insurance for their family. Thankfully, we didn’t have chronic health needs or emergency medical bills, but we were lucky. For countless Alaskans, health coverage is a necessity.
OPINION: A better plan for Alaska food security
We Alaskans are busy. With beautiful sunny days, there’s so much food to harvest in our brief summer and fall. Gardens are thriving, the fish are running, whales are migrating offshore and wildlife is growing to be ready for fall hunts. When the snow melts, food is plentiful. Alaskans have lots to eat. Or do they? Alaska’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a vital food security resource for many working Alaskans and families.
OPINION: It’s time to fix food aid for Alaskans in need
In 2023, no Alaskan should go hungry. Food is one of the most basic, core needs that brings families together during dinner time, ensures a child has enough energy for the school day, and showcases the vibrancy of Alaska’s diverse cultures. September doesn’t just mark the start of the harvest season – it’s also Hunger Action Month. Food security doesn’t just include supporting local farmers and teaching healthy eating practices; it means that food is available to everyone who needs to eat.
OPINION: Different paths to politics
Born and raised in Nome, Löki Tobin has spent her career advocating for equity, community-led development, and helping those in need. Nonetheless, Löki has battled imposter syndrome her whole life. She recognizes she may not have the intrinsic experiences or knowledge of those whose roots are deeply embedded in Alaska. Löki worries she’s not making space, but instead taking up space that she’s not qualified or worthy to hold.
OPINION: Alaska can’t move forward if we ignore the state’s future leaders
