Esophageal cancer (EC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality globally.1 EC is notable for distinct geographic variations in incidence rates and histologic subtypes.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is the seventh most common cancer and the sixth most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide.1 EC is characterized by wide geographic variations in incidence, and more than 80% of cases and deaths occur in developing countries.1 The eastern corridor of Africa, spanning from Ethiopia to South Africa, has been increasingly recognized for its disproportionately high burden of EC (Fig 1).
