I am not unfamiliar with masochism. I am, after all, a video game journalist. Making my way past the halfway mark of a second playthrough of Twisted Tower, a new first-person shooter from Bezi sponsee Thomas Brush (under his studio moniker, Atmos Games), however, I wondered if even I – unkind as I am to myself – was taking the self-flagellation too far. Twisted Tower is a strange game. In places, it is a dead game: without intent, imagination, and with only a shred of entertaining violence.

The depreciation of that ability over the past two years holds interesting parallels with a gaming industry in which singular genres are increasingly a thing of the past.
