Every downturn I have watched since 1979 has produced the same memo. Hold spending. And cut marketing first. I get. And I totally understand why. Marketing is the largest investment a firm makes that accounting will not let it call an investment. Under IAS 38, a brand you buy sits on your balance sheet. The one you build goes on your income statement and disappears. Cut it, and the entire saving lands in this year's operating profit.
