TYRLC Statement: Raising the Luxury Homes Tax and Other Steps to Prevent Service Cuts in Toronto’s 2026 Annual Budget
Jan 8th, 2026 “Cut taxes for the wealthy and cut public services” has been the mantra for almost all governments in Canada for the past 40 years, with few exceptions. One of those exceptions is Toronto Mayor Oliva Chow – who late last year increased the Luxury Homes Tax to fund programs that make life more affordable for families, like the workers and union members the Labour Council represents.
Rally: No To Hate; Everyone Belongs
On October 25th at 11:30 am, join a unity rally to say: IMMIGRANTS ARE WELCOME HERE, NO TO HATE AND SCAPEGOATING! “Canada First” are bringing their hate to Queen’s Park on October 25th. They seek to spread vicious hate, blaming immigrants for crises in housing, jobs and social services. This far-right group, that looks to UK fascist Tommy Robinson for inspiration, is promoting “remigration” – a call for mass deportation of people of non-European or non-Christian descent.
Is There A Real Difference Between The Libs And Cons On Palestine?
I know many of you will be factoring Palestine into your decision on how to vote in the upcoming federal election. With that in mind, it’s important to know where Canada’s major parties, particularly the Liberals and Conservatives, stand on Palestine in terms of their foreign policy and how they relate to the Palestine solidarity movement within Canada.
Doug Ford isn’t the (only) reason that everything is terrible. Neoliberalism did that
Once again, neoliberalism has handed Doug Ford another majority government in Ontario. Healthcare privatization. U.S. trade agreements. Toll roads and taxes. These were all hot topics of the 2025 Ontario election, but you’d be forgiven for not recognizing that they were all being discussed and debated 30 years ago.
Life Without Rent Control: ‘It’s Been a Disaster’
Shanice is a tenant in a building without rent control in the northwest Toronto neighbourhood of York South–Weston. Her original 2019 rent of $1,550 has now exploded to almost $2,300. She has been getting rent increases of anywhere between 10 to 15 per cent a year, with another increase coming this year. While most rental units in Ontario have rent control, Shanice’s doesn’t.
It’s Time To Treat America As The Menace It Has Always Been
We are dealing with a gangster state. This week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that after chatting with United States President Donald Trump, Canada will be spared from crippling 25 per cent tariffs. For now.
Gaza Death Revisionists Are The New Holocaust Deniers
In January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) released an order effectively stating that some of Israel’s actions in Gaza may amount to genocide. Many others, including Amnesty International, The Lemkin Institute and a United Nations Special Committee, have already concluded that Israel has committed genocide. These findings have not been accepted by Israel or its supporters. Instead, they’ve engaged in genocide denial.
Trudeau Stood By As The Housing Crisis Engulfed Canada
Where We Are Last month, the Canadian Press named the housing crisis as the top news story of 2024. Housing is an issue that can’t be escaped. Renters (particularly the disabled, seniors and racialized people) are getting hammered, larger shares of their income on rent as increases outpace wage growth. Homeowners, particularly newer ones, are seeing higher interest rates eat into their income and sometimes forcing them to sell their property.
A Ceasefire In Gaza Is Just The First Step Toward Liberation
Since October 7, Zionist airstrikes have killed more than 7,000 Gazans, including at least 2,913 children. Tuesday was reportedly the deadliest day for Palestinians since the beginning of the assault, with 748 recorded martyrs. Hundreds more are still missing underneath the rubble. In the occupied West Bank, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) has killed at least 110 Palestinians and arrested more than 1,000.
A List Of Journalists Supporting Israel’s War On Gaza
Since Israel’s latest bombing of Gaza began earlier this month, Israel has: Killed more than 5,087 Palestinians, including at least 2,055 children Injured more than 15,273 Palestinians Enforced a siege on Gaza that has included cutting off food, water and electricity Caused more than 1 million Gazans to flee their homes Used white phosphorus on Gazans repeatedly Israel’s operation has won support — both before it kicked off and since — from a range of media columnists, editorial boards, hosts...
The global money pool that soaked Canada's hope of affordable housing ⋆ The Breach
In 2021, after more than a decade in the same apartment in Toronto, my partner and I finally moved. We’d had enough of the landlord, who wouldn’t do repairs to the building’s outdated electrical system, and the city, which was useless at enforcing standards. Luckily, the pandemic provided a temporary reprieve from soaring rental housing costs. We were able to pay a bit more for a better place with laundry, a dishwasher and a backyard.
Doug Ford's Plan To End Rent Control Is A Flashback To 20 Years Ago
Today, millionaire Premier Doug Ford introduced a plan to end rent control on all new units in Ontario. It was a startling reversal of his May campaign promise: "When it comes to rent control, we're going to maintain the status quo." For tenant advocates, it was a flashback to 20 years earlier. In 1997, the Mike Harris government gutted rent control.
Does Toronto need tougher rent controls? Yes
As Toronto sinks deeper into a housing affordability crisis, rent control can help and more is needed. Last week, RBC released a report showing that “housing affordability has reached its worst level in 28 years with the most severe challenges in Toronto” and Vancouver. For tenant advocates, this isn’t a surprise. The last time Ontario had strong rent controls was 27 years ago (in 1991) before they were cut by Conservative Premier Mike Harris.
List of Protests that Federal Government is Tracking Released
A list of protests, demonstrations and events being tracked by Ottawa was released today after Nova Scotia MP, Scott Brison requested data from the Public Safety Canada department. The list shows the date of the event, a short summary of the event and the source doing the tracking which includes several Federal departments, the RCMP and media articles. While hundreds of events have been tracked in Canada, various Federal departments have also kept tabs on events in foreign countries as well.
Greed and Partisan Politics are the Reasons You Don't Have Rent Control
The Ontario government recently had the chance to fix the two-tier rental market, but Liberals and Progressive Conservatives joined forces to shut it down. Elections are usually known for bringing out the political basket of goodies: tax breaks, extra spending, programs, protections etc. So, you’d think a bill protecting Ontario’s tenants from massive rent increases would be politically easy right about now for all parties—a slam-dunk with an election right around the corner. Sadly, you’d be wrong.
