How heavy rain would affect Safari Rally Kenya – DirtFish
The clouds are gathering. The rain’s coming. The big questions are: how much and for how long? George Donaldson is a man who knows all about African rain, how it can impact on Safari Rally Kenya and what’s needed from a car to make the most of it. Over to you, GD. All the time, the drivers and co-drivers have to remember one thing: patience. George Donaldson There’s the potential for the long rains – Kenya’s rainy season which runs through the spring months – to start during the rally proper.
Should Toyota use team orders to help Evans? – DirtFish
Hyundai team principal Cyril Abiteboul made his intentions crystal clear at last year’s Rally Sweden. His team had a primary target: win the drivers’ title with Thierry Neuville. On round two of the season, team orders were deployed: Craig Breen would take a 10-second late check-in penalty and hand his team-mate second place. It didn’t work – Neuville made an error on the power stage and dropped back to third.
The Safari stage drivers didn't want to do – DirtFish
Takamoto Katsuta isn’t usually one for big statements, so it was quite a surprise to hear him say something so bold. “I have never had this kind of feeling,” he began. “I don’t want to drive this stage anymore actually! It’s too bad.” Katsuta had just arrived at the end of the fourth stage of this year’s Safari Rally Kenya, and what he’d just experienced wasn’t tickling his fancy. Rally drivers love driving, but Katsuta wasn’t feeling it.
Katsuta has sights set on Ogier "in near future" – DirtFish
Takamoto Katsuta lost out to seven-time world champion Sébastien Ogier on Safari Rally Kenya but has his sights set on overturning the balance in the near future. Katsuta led a World Rally Championship event for the first time when Thierry Neuville retired after sustaining damage on Sunday’s opening test, but was soon reeled in by Ogier having shared the lead with the championship leader two stages from home.
Safari could inspire other African nations to host WRC round – DirtFish
The latest WRC3 winner, Onkar Rai, hopes the success of last week’s Safari Rally Kenya will inspire other African nations to host a round of the World Rally Championship in the future. Rai – driving a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 alongside Drew Sturrock – dominated proceedings in the RC2 class last week, leading the event from stage two onwards to claim a dominant class win as well as seventh place overall on the leaderboard.
Ogier: Safari challenge is what we want as drivers – DirtFish
Safari Rally Kenya winner Sébastien Ogier has hailed the return of the event to the World Rally Championship, saying the challenge it presents is “what we like” as drivers. The Safari returned to the WRC last week for the first time since 2002 and proved to be a real challenge with extreme weather, unpredictable road surfaces and rocky terrain taking its toll on the field. Of the 11 World Rally Cars to start, only five made it to the finish without retiring at any point during the weekend.
What are the rules that Ogier was punished for? – DirtFish
You know, we’ve seen these situations many times before during the course of a rally. A car sustains damage – more often than not on the stage, but occasionally, as was the case on Sunday, on a road section – and the debates rage as to the compliance of the damaged car to the safety regulations. Well, at the end of the day, the FIA safety delegate has the authority to asses any aspect of the crew’s safety compliance at any point during a rally.
GCU deserves to play big-name schools
A link has been posted to your Facebook feed. A big thank you to the University of Kentucky Wildcats for playing the Grand Canyon University Antelopes. The thanks is not for the pasting of our Antelopes, but for recognizing GCU as a worthy opponent in a warm-up effort for the upcoming season. Unlike one of our local universities, who seem to feel themselves above such a move in not scheduling "the for-profit" GCU, Kentucky did the right thing.
