Ryan Yates: Nottingham Forest centre-back?
As Nottingham Forest continue to evolve in the Premier League, the place of their unconventional captain is consistently in doubt. Ryan Yates is used to this. Whenever a new manager arrives at the City Ground — Oliver Glasner is the ninth Yates will have played under since his first league start in February 2019 — questions arise as to how he will slot into the new system and direction. Glasner’s arrival in place of Vitor Pereira is no different.

Sangare missed last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool after sustaining a minor calf injury in training having played 90 minutes in Forest’s opening day defeat to Leeds United.

How much does it cost to watch the Premier League around the world?
Same league. Same matches. Very different prices. The Premier League as a global product in 2026. Outrage was cast on social media after the Premier League unveiled its Premier League+ platform in conjunction with StarHub, which allows football fans in Singapore to access all 380 matches across the season for the equivalent of £23.55 ($32) per month, while supporters in the UK pay more than double that, without access to every match.
Half a million fans proved the EFL can thrive – at a fraction of the World Cup cost
One standard ticket to the World Cup final, or all home league games for two EFL seasons? The latter would have been cheaper by £120. The EFL comprises the 72 clubs in the three divisions below the Premier League: the Championship, League One and League Two. Across their opening round of fixtures, 521,783 people attended.
Rodri’s journey from a Connecticut camp to World Cup win and Barcelona transfer: ‘Football was his religion’ Original
Thirty teenage campers were huddled around a hastily-rigged television screen watching Spain lift the World Cup. One of them could not contain his delight — and 16 years later, he would collect and raise that same trophy, as Spain’s captain. In the summer of 2010, Rodri, then an Atletico Madrid academy prospect, ventured to the Incarnation Camp in Deep River, Connecticut — an environment where watching football, despite the World Cup being played in South Africa at that time, was unheard of.
Over the last decade, the Premier League has followed a pattern. Pep Guardiola leading Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal attempting to keep pace. Promoted teams struggling to tread water, and Aston Villa and Newcastle United building momentum. So, with only a few days to go until the big kick-off, here are 20 of the biggest storylines of an exciting new season. Can Arsenal do it again? For Arsenal and Arteta, winning the title last season changed everything.
Two 60-minute games? Three 45-minute halves? Why Premier League clubs are playing weird friendlies Original
For almost 150 years, regulation time in football matches has consisted of 90 minutes to determine a result — but many teams appear to have had other ideas this pre-season. Liverpool will play a total of 180 minutes against Serie A side Como across two games tomorrow (Sunday), one behind closed doors at their training ground at noon locally, the other at Anfield at 6pm.
Filled with self-doubt, Wayde van Niekerk cried before breaking the men’s 400m world record Original
“I’ve always been a low-confidence athlete. Somewhat insecure.” On August 14, at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Wayde van Niekerk ran the final of the men’s 400m in 43.03 seconds to not only become Olympic champion but also break Michael Johnson’s world record. It is a record that still stands today. But the hours and minutes leading up to his historic run was a battle between body and mind. Ten years on, the South African talks about the perfectionist mindset he has struggled with across his career.

England and Aston Villa player’s rise from the fourth tier to getting a call from Sarina Wiegman Original
From the outside, Lucia Kendall has enjoyed a rapid rise. Within 12 months, the 21-year-old midfielder has arrived at Aston Villa, established herself in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and broken into the England team, scoring her first international goal before the end of the year. It paints the picture of a player who had arrived at the elite level fully formed. In an interview with The Athletic, Kendall smiles at that suggestion.
Mohamed Salah, Darius Vassell and a goat: Turkey doesn’t do lowkey transfer arrivals Original
Hours after it was announced Mohamed Salah was travelling to Turkey to continue talks over a move to Trabzonspor, the club’s supporters began to gather. The Turkish Super Lig has become used to welcoming stars of this stature, but Salah — a two-time Premier League and 2019 Champions League winner with Liverpool — may be the most exciting of them all. Rather than touch down in Trabzon, the city on the Black Sea where the club are based, the 34-year-old arrived in Istanbul.
Many English sports fans dislike ‘God Save The King’. Is it time for a new national anthem? Original
As England racked up gold medals at the Commonwealth Games over the past week, a question has been raised: Is it time for the country to have a standalone sporting national anthem? It is a thorny topic.
Adam Ramsay-Peaty, a name-change and a swimming GOAT’s celebrity family feud Original
“A bronze medal for England’s Adam Ramsay-Peaty.” That announcement was made twice at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, once in Saturday’s 100m breaststroke final, and again in last night’s 50m race, and it sounded out of place. Partly this was down to the colour of the medals: bronze would represent a stellar achievement for most athletes, but for Ramsay-Peaty — who has won 51 medals at major events in his career, with only 19 not being gold — it will not engender any fondness.
Kazuyoshi Miura, world’s oldest soccer pro, scores first goal in four years at age of 59 Original
At the age of 59, Kazuyoshi Miura, the world’s oldest professional footballer, has scored his first goal for nearly four years for Japanese third-tier side Fukushima United. The striker is into his 42nd professional season and scored Fukushima’s fifth goal in their 7-0 thrashing of Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor’s Cup. “I wanted to live up to the expectations of everyone, including the manager, who had given me the opportunity to play until that point,” Miura said, via Fukushima’s website.
The footballer who has literally launched his career
Growing up as a young footballer, you envisage announcing yourself with a stoppage-time winner, a thunderous strike from 30 yards or a miraculous save. Not a throw-in. That was how former Stoke City midfielder Rory Delap — Chelsea striker Liam Delap’s dad — built one of the Premier League’s most unlikely reputations, and how a Huddersfield Town academy graduate has now gone viral.
Behind the scenes at the cricket academy making a difference Original
The Athletic has launched a Cricket WhatsApp Channel. Click here to join. “How have you not got a professional contract, playing like that?” a Surrey academy coach asks Savin Perera. “You tell me,” Perera replies, greeting him with a handshake and a hint of a smile. The coach pauses. “Keep the faith,” he responds as he walks off and into the pavilion.
Enzo Fernandez says Argentina played with ‘pride and humility’ at World Cup
Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez says his country played with “pride and humility” at the World Cup. The post-full-time scenes have since triggered a FIFA investigation, after Argentina’s Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada were involved in a confrontation with Rodri, Gavi and Eric Garcia of Spain. As well as Fernandez, four other players and head coach Lionel Scaloni were booked during the final, taking Argentina’s total bookings to 14 for the tournament.
Josh Kerr temporarily lost hearing and ‘negotiated’ with his mind during mile world record Original
“It’s been a long time coming.” Relief and elation were his main emotions, the 28-year-old explains from the athlete hotel in Stratford, a short walk from London Stadium, where he had made history the day before. “It was never going to be an easy record,” he says of beating Hicham El Guerrouj’s 3:43.13 run in Rome 27 years ago.

Who is Slavko Vincic, the referee for Spain vs. Argentina in World Cup final? Original
Slovenian official Slavko Vincic is the referee for Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium. The 46-year-old from Maribor — who took charge of the 2024 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund — is the first person from his country to take charge of the world’s biggest football fixture. He will be assisted by Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, both also from Slovenia, while German Bastian Dankert will be the VAR.
How a lower-league team from an English fishing town launched the most desirable kits of the summer Original
“Cantiamo solo quando peschiamo.” That’s a direct translation of one of Grimsby Town’s most coveted chants: “We only sing when we’re fishing.” Everything sounds better in Italian but, as this League Two side from Lincolnshire, halfway up the east coast of England near the River Humber, have discovered, everything looks better in Italian, too.
France vs England mega-preview: Predictions, form guide, key players and more
Is this the game that no player or team wants to be part of? Probably. It is between the two sides who fell one match short of reaching the World Cup final, so that would be understandable. That final is between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, but first, on Saturday, their defeated semi-final opponents, France and England respectively, face off in what FIFA is calling the tournament’s “Bronze final” but to most other people is the third/fourth-place play-off. There will be some intrigue, though.
How much prize money is won at the World Cup? Original
True enough, it has had more teams and matches than ever before. That has meant more goals and host cities than ever before. And its biggest stars, such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland and the rest, have put on a spectacle like never before. With the World Cup’s increasing size comes greater revenue, and with the final three days away, FIFA is set to award record amounts of prize money to teams across the competition.
A beginner’s guide to the England soccer team: German coach, two star players and 60 years of hurt Original
As the 48-team field which arrived at this World Cup shrinks, England has emerged as a favorite with American audiences. TFrom post-match renditions of Oasis’ Wonderwall to the passion displayed after that win at the Estadio Azteca, England has captured the attention of many — unless you happen to support their bitter rival, Scotland.
Should Thomas Tuchel pick Dan Burn to deal with Erling Haaland in World Cup quarter-final?
Erling Haaland has scored more than half of Norway’s goals at this World Cup, and no defence has silenced him. He is Norway’s man to stop — so after frequently nullifying him at club level, could England’s 6ft 7in 34-year-old be the answer for Thomas Tuchel in their quarter-final? In his first appearance of the tournament against Mexico, Dan Burn endeared himself to England fans with a substitute appearance to savour.

Why is Erling Haaland’s name different at the World Cup? Original
Erling Haaland is perhaps the most recognisable striker at this World Cup. But while his five goals in three matches have come as no surprise, the name on the back of his shirt has caught many off guard. The 25-year-old has ‘Haaland’ on the back of his shirts for his club side, Manchester City. But at Norway’s first major tournament since 2000, the name on the back of his shirt reads ‘Braut Haaland’. ‘Braut’ is the surname of Halaand’s mother, former professional heptathlete Gry Marita.
Can Ibrahim Sangare help fill void left by Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest? Original
When Nottingham Forest signed Ibrahim Sangare from PSV, he was supposed to be the ready-made midfielder to propel them up the Premier League table. It turned out he was not. But with Elliot Anderson having departed, he now has to be. Forest beat interest from Liverpool and Arsenal to secure the Ivorian’s services in September 2023, arriving at the City Ground for a then club record fee of £30million ($46.7m in today’s exchange).
Celebrate qualifying for The Open? This golfer only wanted to know Norway’s World Cup score
The biggest moment of his golfing career occupied his mind for… a matter of minutes. Norway’s Bard Bjornevik Skogen had just become only the third Norwegian golfer to qualify for The Open this century, but between the various media commitments that came with his achievement, he was fixated on football.
Who is the referee and VAR for USMNT vs Bosnia at World Cup? Original
The United States’ success in the group stage has grabbed the headlines and they now head into the round of 32 with high hopes. After topping Group D with wins against Paraguay and Australia, the U.S. will face Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in the first knockout round of the World Cup. The match kicks off at 8pm ET/5pm PT/1am+1 BST, with the winners securing a round-of-16 tie against either Belgium or Senegal.
The U.S. finally has a soccer team to make this World Cup memorable and for one summer, American football is coming without helmets, huddles or fourth downs. Mauricio Pochettino arrived in 2024 with two years to prepare the USMNT for soccer’s biggest tournament on home soil and his work is paying off. They topped Group D, beating Paraguay and Australia, thanks to the exploits of Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie and Chris Richards.

Tiger (not that one) and US TikTok star qualify for The Open Original
An American TikTok star and a different Tiger booked places at The Open on Tuesday as five U.S. players came through final qualifying. James Nicholas, a regular on the Korn Ferry Tour, topped the standings at Burnham & Berrow. At the same time, Germany’s Tiger Christensen — whose first name was inspired partly by Tiger Woods — advanced at West Lancashire three years after qualifying there for his Open debut.
What is extra time in soccer? Explaining ‘overtime’ in the knockout stages of the World Cup Original
Lionel Messi scored his second goal of the game in the 108th minute. Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty for a hat-trick 10 minutes later. And there was still time for Randal Kolo Muani to be denied a winner by a magnificent Emiliano Martinez save. All of that occurred during extra time of the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar between France and Argentina.
World Cup fashion: Ranking the dress sense of the 49 coaches
Forget formations, substitutions and results. The most important question at this World Cup is much, much simpler — what are the coaches wearing? From Bond-villain gold chains and on-point tailoring to identity lanyards, gym teacher sneakers and enough technical polyester to clothe a small nation, the touchlines have produced triumphs… and several outfits that should never have cleared customs.
Which World Cup players are at risk of suspension?
Folarin Balogun, Tyler Adams and Chris Richards have been integral to the USMNT’s stunning start to the World Cup — but would Mauricio Pochettino be wise to bench them in their final group game against Turkey to avoid the risk of suspension? Thomas Tuchel has the same dilemma with England midfielder Declan Rice against Panama.

Lucas Bergvall: Elliot Anderson’s Nottingham Forest replacement – where else could he go? Original
The seemingly impossible task of replacing Elliot Anderson has begun for Nottingham Forest. Since Anderson arrived from Newcastle United two years ago, for £35million, Forest have not signed a holding midfielder on a permanent deal. Only Douglas Luiz and James Ward-Prowse arrived on loan in that time, making 14 starts between them and returning to their parent clubs by January.
What is a red card? What is a yellow card? Original
For his 1998 Ballon d’Or and 125 career goals, it was the waving of a card that became one of the most revered moments of Zinedine Zidane’s playing career. France were locked in a 1-1 stalemate with eventual winners Italy in the 2006 World Cup final in Germany, when Zidane provided one of the competition’s most memorable moments.
Why was a World Cup referee drinking pickle juice?
It was an odd ending to an entertaining encounter: a referee collapsing with cramp in added time. There were just a few minutes left of USA’s 2-0 victory over Australia at the World Cup when Felix Zwayer fell to the ground and called for assistance. But just as striking as the injury itself was the remedy: pickle juice, handed to him by Mexican fourth official Katie Garcia. So why did he resort to it and have we seen this before? The Athletic tells you all you need to know.
The World Cup and middle names of Yamal, Saka and Gyokeres – from the meaningful to mmmm Original
Spanish defender Gerard Pique is best known for his trophy-laden career with Barcelona and Spain — but ‘Bernabeu’, the name of Barca’s arch rivals Real Madrid’s stadium, is his middle name. That does not top the best name in football, ever, though: Mark De Man is The Athletic’s favourite — he was always destined to be an international defender with Belgium.
Iran soccer federation says it will lodge FIFA complaint over World Cup travel arrangements Original
The Iran soccer federation (FFIRI) says it intends to lodge an official complaint with FIFA regarding its World Cup travel arrangements between its base camp in Mexico and games in the United States. In a statement, the FFIRI accused FIFA of having an “inconsistent” approach to providing “equal conditions for all participating teams,” before their second game in Group G game in Los Angeles against Belgium on June 21.

Brentford’s Premier League fixtures: Full 2026-27 schedule and dates
Brentford will kick off their Premier League season at home to Tottenham Hotspur. In their first season under head coach Keith Andrews, who succeeded Thomas Frank last summer, Brentford finished ninth in the Premier League. It was Brentford’s joint-highest league finish in their history, and they fell just short of qualifying for the Conference League. Brentford will face west London rivals Fulham away on December 12, before the reverse fixture at the Gtech Community Stadium on April 24.

England are the last top-10 ranked team to play at this World Cup. Does it affect their chances?
If Thomas Tuchel is to become the first foreign manager to win the World Cup, he has a small window in which to do so. England’s tournament starts late. If they last the distance, it is shorter than any of the other world’s top-10 ranked teams. There are 32 days from their opening Group L game against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on Wednesday until the final on July 19. Meanwhile, Brazil kicked off on June 13, Germany and the Netherlands the following day. It sounds like a significant disadvantage.
