During Essendon’s 30-point loss to West Coast I saw a Bombers fan holding up a sing that simply read: “Bring. Back. Hird.” Every social media post about the Bombers’ vacant coaching position has the same sentiment, repeated hundreds of times by supporters convinced there is only one man for the job. Maybe I’m missing something. Because I don’t get why. Don’t get me wrong, I understand what Hird means to Essendon.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has confirmed it will end funding for LIV Golf at the close of the 2026 season. After reportedly losing more than $5 billion since launching in 2022, the breakaway tour is now scrambling for outside investment to survive beyond its scheduled August finale. The announcement closes another chapter in one of the most controversial periods in all modern sports. For many people within golf, that news has been met with satisfaction.

The AFL doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel here, it just needs to pay attention. What the NRL has done with the NRLW, and especially with State of Origin, is deliberate, patient, and, most importantly, respectful of the product. They’ve treated women’s rugby league as something worth showcasing. Because it is something worth showcasing. On Thursday night, the only rugby league match on TV was the women’s State of Origin. Not a second match of the night after a men’s, on a second channel.
