1 Introduction Worldwide, more than 1.5 billion people (one in five) are affected by some form of hearing loss [1]. By 2050, this number could rise to 2.5 billion (one in four people), with nearly 700 million (one in 14) experiencing moderate or higher levels of hearing loss [1]. Hearing loss sharply increases with age and is the third leading cause of disability worldwide [2].
