1 Introduction Carbonic anhydrases (CAs; EC 4.2.1.1) are a family of ubiquitous metalloenzymes found in most eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. CAs are encoded by eight evolutionarily unrelated gene families [1-16]. Fifteen α-class isozymes have been identified in humans (h), differing in molecular features, cellular localization, organ and tissue distribution and expression, and kinetic properties [17, 18].
