1 Introduction Anthraquinones are a family of polycyclic compounds built around a quinone unit, widely distributed in nature, and endowed with biological activity. Chrysophanol (Figure 1, compound A), which has been shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antitumor properties, is a good example.[1] Structures of chrysophanol (A), alizarin (B), disperse blue 1 (C) and anthraquinone (D).
