FAAA welcomes Government action on financial abuse
The Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) welcomes the Australian Government’s response to the 2024 Parliamentary Joint Committee inquiry into financial abuse and its commitment to working with the financial services sector to better protect Australians. “Financial abuse is a complex issue that requires a coordinated national response.
Your Personal Brand: Your Greatest Asset in a Changing World
The world of work is changing around us. Your role may change. Your company may change. Technology will change. But the skills, reputation, relationships and value you build are yours to take with you. We are living and working in a VUCA world: volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. AI and technology are changing how work gets done. Businesses are restructuring, roles are evolving, client expectations are shifting and the skills organisations need are changing with them.
Paraplanning’s Next Era: Strategic, Tech Driven, Compliance Led
For a long time, people in our profession have viewed paraplanners as note-takers and creators of Statements of Advice only after the strategy is set. But times have changed. That old view no longer reflects the present, or future of paraplanning. The modern paraplanner is both a strategic partner and a compliance gatekeeper within the advice preparation process As AI automation and other technology become the norm, the role of paraplanners is evolving in exciting ways.
FAAA calls on Government to put Australian consumers at the centre of financial sector reform
Sarah Abood, CEO of the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA), says Minister Mulino’s National Press Club address next week must put Australians’ access to affordable, trustworthy financial advice at the centre of the Government’s reform agenda.
Statement on ASIC Funding Levy
The FAAA is particularly concerned by the significant increase in the ASIC Funding Levy for the 2025/56 financial year, up 27%. This, along with the recently announced CSLR special levy, will have a very significant cost impact on the financial advice profession. Government levies could reach well over $5,000 per adviser this year. This is based upon $3,037 for the ASIC funding levy for 2025/26, plus the CSLR annual levy and an allocation for the FY27 CSLR special levy (totalling $170.3 million).
The generation we can’t afford to lose
Last week I attended an event where some industry leaders argued against hiring young people. I found that hard to understand, given the talent and potential we have seen through our own graduate programme. It also felt like a return to 2014, when youth unemployment hit 20%. At that time, redundancy rates were higher, there was no apprenticeship levy, and a third of those affected entered higher education. This issue is deeply personal to me.
Access to financial advice critical to navigating Budget
“The breadth of this Federal Budget, and the aims of Treasurer Jim Chalmers, are complex and wide-ranging, and its impact on Australians is likely to be substantial. There is no doubt that Australians who have access to quality, professional financial advice will be significantly better placed to navigate these changes than unadvised Australians.
FAAA introduces new customer ID forms to help advisers navigate AML/CTF reforms
The FAAA has launched updated customer identification forms to help advisers meet the most significant changes to the Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) regime in nearly twenty years.
CSLR levy to shrink adviser numbers: FAAA survey
A survey of members by the Financial Advice Association Australia (FAAA) shows the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort (CSLR) levy is set to significantly impact Australia’s financial advice landscape, with the majority of respondents saying it will push up costs for consumers and accelerate adviser exits. The findings show that nine out of ten advisers expect the levy to increase the cost of financial advice, as firms move to pass on the impact of a potential $4,000 per adviser bill.

Joint statement on Education Reform for Financial Advisers
The Joint Associations Working Group (JAWG) strongly supports the government’s proposed education reforms for financial advisers. These reforms will expand the availability of high-quality, trusted financial advice for Australians while creating a more flexible pathway into the profession and maintaining strong professional standards.
FAAA welcomes consultation on CSLR
The FAAA welcomes today’s release of three consultation papers on consumer protection and the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort (CSLR) by Minister Mulino. Sarah Abood, CEO of the FAAA, says: “Preventing future collapses and improving the sustainability and fairness of the CSLR are critical issues for financial advisers, victims of misconduct. and consumers more broadly. We will carefully review the Government’s proposals in coming weeks and we will be engaging with our members on our responses.
FAAA surveying members on the impact of CSLR levies
The FAAA is surveying members to gain up-to-date information on the impact of CSLR levies on their practices. “The FAAA has always been supportive of a scheme to compensate the victims of financial misconduct, however we have long said that the current scheme is unsustainable and needs to be fixed,” says Phil Anderson, general manager – policy, advocacy and standards at the FAAA. “In particular, the burden should not fall unfairly on financial advisers who have done nothing wrong.
FAAA welcomes shadow minister Kevin Hogan and thanks Pat Conaghan
The FAAA congratulates Hon Kevin Hogan MP, the Federal member for Page in Northern NSW, on his appointment as shadow assistant treasurer and minister for financial services. Sarah Abood, CEO of the FAAA, says Mr Hogan’s professional background in financial services will give him insight into Australians’ financial advice needs as well as those of the financial advice community.
Adviser education reforms vital to help close advice gap
The Financial Advice Association of Australia (FAAA) welcomes the Government’s consultation on adviser education reforms, which it says are key to growing the number of high quality professional financial advisers. “We know there is a large, and growing, advice gap in Australia. In the last seven years the number of financial advisers has almost halved, while at the same time, demand for financial advice has skyrocketed,” says Sarah Abood, CEO of the FAAA.
The Price of Confidence - Financial Advice Association Australia
Frank Paul | COO and Head of Risk, WT Financial Group In 2008, a team of researchers at Stanford and the California Institute of Technology published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that should give every financial adviser pause. They gave subjects the same wine but told them it cost different amounts – $5 in one tasting, $45 in another. The subjects didn’t just say the expensive wine tasted better.
Know Me to Grow Me: The Four Preferences That Shape How You Show Up at Work and in Life
When it comes to work and life decisions, most advice focuses on what to do: set clearer goals, build better habits, make smarter choices. Yet what actually plays out for people is often something else. Often, the difference isn’t effort. It’s alignment. Far less attention is given to how we naturally operate as human beings, and how our personality preferences shape the way we show up at work and in life.

My Next Read: "Lost in Music" By Giles Smith
‘In the Spring of 1989, shortly after my twenty-seventh birthday, as I stood in the sleet at a bus stop in Colchester, it dawned on me that I had probably, all things considered, failed in my mission to become Sting. At least, for the time being.’ Giles Smith’s “Lost in Music” is about growing up with pop music – about hearing it, buying it, loving it, and attempting to play it in public for money.

Data centers move from niche investors to center stage
Big data keeps getting bigger. And faster. And more valuable. Consider that 90 percent of all data was created in the past two years; then try to imagine that by 2025 worldwide data is expected to hit 175 zettabytes. To put that in perspective, if you were to store 175 zettabytes on DVDs, your stack would be long enough to circle Earth 222 times. Processing, housing, streaming and securing all that data has given rise to the evolving modern data center.
Outrage: ‘Architects are complicit in the commodification of UK housing’
Freedom for ‘generation rent’ from the tyranny of ownership could help recover the social ambitions of architecture from the rapacious callousness of the real-estate market Designers and architects have for too long been complicit in a real-estate market that exacerbates social inequality. The commodification of our cities, unchecked by a profession profiting from it, is destroying their role as places of public life.

Private data: The architecture of the internet
The popular myth of an immaterial internet is allowing our cities to be covertly corrupted by private infrastructure devoid of any sense of public generosity Years ago, on a quiet lane in rural Devon, I saw a crew of engineers drag great chunks of copper cable from a trench. Each was a thick bundle of copper, remnants of a redundant transatlantic telecommunications cable.
The Enduring Otherworldliness of Stevie Wonder
”The way it goes,” a close friend of Wonder’s once told me, “he’s late, everybody gets mad. He turns up, it doesn’t matter anymore.” The extraordinary roster of black talent on which Motown Records built its success in the sixties gradually broke away and moved on.
