‘Karma’ Review: Marion Cotillard Goes Through Hell in a Juicy Cult-Themed Melodrama That’s Relevant Despite Its Contrivances Original
'Karma' Cannes Film Festival For a brief, enticing stretch of Guillaume Canet’s Karma, it appears to be a film in which Canet’s ex-wife Marion Cotillard plays an alcoholic employed at a Spanish sardine factory. We haven’t seen Cotillard do exactly that before, so that would be a novelty, and it might be nice to watch her in another working-class social drama, all these years after her Oscar-nominated turn in Two Days, One Night.
‘Club Kid’ Review: A Party Animal Turns Papa Bear in Jordan Firstman’s Winsome and Clever Dramedy Original
'Club Kid' Adam Newport Berra The writer and actor Jordan Firstman — known for viral web videos, for films like Rotting in the Sun, for the television series I Love LA — is an acquired taste. He often plays into a certain abrasive, ditzy stereotype about gay men who live in big cities: sex-crazed but loveless, self-conscious and self-aggrandizing at once, literate but dumb, politically aware and yet eager to transgress supposed civility.
‘Tangles’ Review: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Abbi Jacobson and Bryan Cranston Lead a Sweet, Sad, Slightly Generic Look at Dementia Original
'Tangles' Cannes Film Festival Dementia has been palpably rendered on film a number of times this century, in varying tones and cadences. Michael Haneke’s wrenching Amour handles the subject with austere dispassion. Gaspar Noé’s Vortex amps up the stress to contrast the quiet and emptiness left in death’s wake. Florian Zeller artfully renders the near horror-movie disorientation of an afflicted man in The Father.
